President Uhuru Kenyatta’s two Cabinet Secretaries have sharply differed over the ongoing war on contraband sugar.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i led a delegation of top security detail to crackdown on illegal sugar which he said was laced with dangerous metals like mercury.
“What we are doing to our country and what we are doing to ourselves is shocking. The tests done show that this sugar contains dangerous metals such as mercury and copper,” Mating’i said.
Trade CS Adan Mohammed has however dismissed the reports saying it is ‘alarmist’.
Mohamed said Matiang’i is lying to Kenyans and that the sugar in some warehouses had only developed molds and not mercury.
The CS told Matiang’i to table evidence to the effect that there was mercury traces found in the sugar.
The sentiments irked DCI boss George Kinoti.“I am ready to be prosecuted if the report that that sugar had mercury is false. I will meet Mohammed in court,” Kinoti said.
