In what could be an indication that the president might attend the debate, journalists who travel with the president on his campaign tours, were asked to take a rest.

The debate, which is being held at the Catholic University, is the first in a two tier event, with two weeks to the elections.

The debate kicks off at 5:30pm, with the first batch involving six candidates, before the main event at 8pm, which is expected to feature the main contenders; Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

Both leading candidates have kept the press guessing as to whether they will attend the event.

The debate seemed to have been thrown into a turmoil, after both Odinga and Kenyatta said the will not attend, citing non-consultation from the organisers.

However, the organisers maintained that all participants were contacted.

“Nevertheless, the steering committee relentlessly reached out to all campaign teams through formal letters and informal channels,” the statement said.
