President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IG) Joseph Boinnet to ensure that the recruits start training immediately to ensure that the country addresses the shortage of security personnel in the country.

Speaking on Thursday from State House Nairobi, the President said that he will take responsibility for the directive.

"I hereby direct that the 10,000 recruits whose enrolment dispute is pending in court to promptly report for training at the Kiganjo Police Training College. I take full responsibility for this directive," said President Kenyatta.

He added: "We as a country have suffered unnecessarily due to shortage of security personnel. Kenya badly needs additional officers and we will not keep the country waiting."

The President spoke after an attack at the Garissa University College where suspected Al Shabaab militants took students hostage killing several and injuring many more.

President Kenyatta, who also sent condolences to the families of the deceased, quick recovery of the injured and safe rescue of the hostages further appealed to the country to remain calm saying the government is in control of the situation.

The attack came a few weeks after Nairobi University issued a statement on an impending attack on institutions of higher learning.
