President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the Senate refurbished Chamber and the new wing of parliament buildings.
He said the refurbishment of the chamber at a cost of Sh8 billion, demonstrates his government’s desire to facilitate senators to discuss matters that concern devolution in a conducive environment.
The chamber was first built in 1952.
''Democracy is expensive but it is our responsibility to ensure it flourishes,” said Uhuru.
After the last general elections, members of the Senate held their sessions in different buildings while refurbishments works were going on.
National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, who is also the chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), said although senators briefly experienced discomfort as the rehabilitation work was ongoing, the commission was committed to creating a favourable environment for them to work.
Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro thanked the president for gracing the occasion, saying the opening of the chamber demonstrated his commitment to devolution.
