Nandi lawmaker Samsom Cherargei insisted Uhuru must support Ruto to succeed him in 2022 as a way of honouring his pledge to his deputy who has backed him 'wholeheartedly' in the last two election campaigns.

"We supported Jubilee and we voted Uhuru in 2013 and 2017 and betrayal of William Ruto in 2022 will not be entertained...it is a must," Cherargai said, as quoted by the Nation.

The outspoken Senator accused the President of attempting to sabotage Ruto's ambition through his sentiments that politicians should stop 2022 politics and focus on development.

"They are saying we should not talk about 2022 because our son William Ruto is a breathe away from the top seat. We will talk about 2022 whether they like it or not," he stated.

Cherargei spoke on Friday at Tinderet where he toured to assess damage caused by landslides due to the ongoing heavy rains.

His remarks comes after President Kenyatta warned unnamed politicians within Jubilee against undermining his unity deal with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during the funeral service of the Second Liberation hero Kenneth Matiba, the Head of State asked leaders to tone down on succession politics and focus on fostering unity among Kenyans.

'I am suprised that when we meet with Raila and shake hands stories have started about 2022. Let us leave this politics aside as there will be 2022, 2027...and so on. Let us focus on what matters to our people," Uhuru said on Thursday.

Some politicians have claimed that the remarks were directed to Ruto who has declared interest in ascending to power in the next four years, claims that continue to cause tension between the President and his deputy.
