Speaking during the 53rd Jamhuri Day celebrations held at Nyayo stadium in Nairobi on Monday, Uhuru called on Kenyans to maintain peace and unity which he noted was important for the country's progress.

He also called on Kenyans to shun tribalism considering that the country was readying for the 2017 general election.

According to Uhuru, fanning of tribalism in the country would only lead to violence as was witnessed in the 2007/08 period.

"I call on you Kenyans to maintain peace and unity and shun tribalism. Fanning of tribalism at the moment will only lead to problems come next year. This is because we are gearing for the 2017 elections and you all know what tribalism can cause," said Uhuru.

"We are one people and as you know, peace and unity will enable the country to achieve more in terms of development," he added.

Politicians were further put on notice by the Head of State who warned them against being agents of tribalism.

He instead called on politicians to preach peace and sell their agendas to the people devoid of tribalism.

"Politicians in the country have a role of uniting Kenyans. No politician should thus be involved in fanning tribalism. Politicians should only sell their agenda to the people and let the voters decide who should lead them," he reiterated.
