President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati to declare him President, Standard has reported.
Speaking in Taita Taveta, Uhuru questioned why Raila went to the Supreme Court only to boycott the election.
“NASA leaders have put up so many obstacles yet they knew they were not going to participate in the election. Why did they go to court in the first place? he posed, as quoted by the local daily.
Lawyer Nelson Havi argues that Uhuru will be compelled to ensure that at one voter turns out in every polling station if October election date is maintained.
“Jubilee is determined to ensure even if there is a boycott in NASA strongholds, they will have one individual voting in a constituency and a polling station. If that be the case, then an election will have been conducted,” he writes as quoted by Star.
This, however, is likely to be a daunting task on his part considering the political situation in the nation. The Jubilee party will have it tough getting even a single vote in some of the opposition’s strongholds including Nyanza and Coast. Jubilee and National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders have elicited mixed reaction following the decision of Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga to withdraw from the presidential.
Some of the leaders of Jubilee want Uhuru to be declared the winner and sworn in as the President following the latest development. Another group has insisted that the election scheduled on October 26 should go on as planned. Havi also said that he fears the economy will collapse if Uhuru retains power.
