President Uhuru Kenyatta has hit at the Opposition ODM party over their plan to dish out direct tickets to some 400 aspirants, terming it a mockery to democracy.

Uhuru said that they (Opposition) were acting in contravention of the tenets of democracy that require voters to make their own choices.

He said that issuing the nomination certificates 'over a cup of tea' at a boardroom meeting was a regressive act that would tarnish the country's democracy.

“They are issuing nominations like sweets and that is not what democracy is about,” the President said.

Uhuru challenged the Opposition to conduct their nominations so as to prove to Kenyans that indeed they stand for leadership of the people.

He spoke this in Narok county where he commissioned multi-billion-shilling projects including the Narok Water Supply Project that has been funded by the National Government at a cost of Sh1.5 billion.

He also launched upgrading of the Narok–Sekenani Gate Road to bitumen status at a cost of Sh2.2 billion.
