Money meant for voter mobilisation has allegedly gone missing in Nyeri creating anxiety to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign team in the county.
Claims have emerged that millions of shillings donated to his campaigns had gone missing in the county which has trailed Jubilee strongholds in registering new voters.
The lag allegedly forced President Kenyatta to form a special secretariat to mobilise voter registration in Nyeri with the secretariat reportedly receiving Sh80 million through donations made by Mt Kenya billionaires supporting the president’s re-election.
Local leaders, according to Kenyans.co.ke have raised concerns claiming that the money has not been utilised as it should but has been misused by the secretariat.
On Tuesday, according to the publication, the secretariat denied misusing the funds through former government spokesman Muthui Kariuki.
He claimed that his secretariat had only received Sh6 million which had been used in mobilisation drives across the area.
Kariuki also refuted claims that the secretariat had been supporting certain aspirants through donations meant for voter mobilisation, according to the publication.
“This is a lie. I can confirm that nobody has been given money by the secretariat and all the money has gone to the actual recruitment on the ground,” Kariuki was quoted by Kenyans.co.ke.
Allegations against the secretariat claim that the members have been relaxing in prestigious hotels in the area instead of going to the villages for recruitment.
