President Uhuru Kenyatta has received a major endorsement for reelection from an influential group at the Coast. The Mombasa Council of Elders, while announcing that they fully support President Kenyatta for a second term, said they had witnessed numerous development projects in the region initiated by the Jubilee administration. President Kenyatta’s efforts to revive the Mtongwe Channel Crossing, construct of the Standard Gauge Railway and build the second berth at the Port of Mombasa are part of the reasons cited by the group's chairman, Mohamed Jahazi, for endorsing the Jubilee administration. “Despite the ICC cases hanging heavy over their shoulder, the two were able to do this much. What about when they are free,” the chairman said, as per the Star. He also revealed that the powerful members were impressed by the efforts by Uhuru and Ruto to provide title deeds to the Coast residents, settle the landless and buying of a new ferry for transportation. The chairman, who spoke during a press event at a Coast hotel, termed as ‘childish’ Governor Hassan Joho’s claim that the setting up of a dry port in Naivasha will harm Mombasa’s economy.
