President Kenyatta has been congratulated by Kofi Annan[Photo/NPR.org]Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has commended Uhuru Kenyatta following his re-election.The former UN Secretary General also asked the Head of State to implement measures that would ensure unity within the country as Kenya continues to grow.Mr. Annan lauded Kenyatta following his victory speech where he reached out to his competitor, opposition leader Raila Odinga, while also pleading with Kenyans to practice peace.“I congratulate President Kenyatta on his re-election and his victory speech in which he reached out to his rival and called on all Kenyans to reconcileand embrace peace. I urge him to pursue these efforts to bring together all elements of Kenyan society to move the country forward,” Annan said as reported by the Standard.He commended Kenyans for their devotion to democracy, which showed following the high turn out in voting on August 8.“I congratulate the people of Kenya for turning out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right of voting and maintaining peace before and throughout the process,” said Annan.Annan also praised opposition candidate Raila Odinga for running a peaceful campaign and for advocating democracy.
