President Uhuru Kenyatta has responded to details linking him to the Team Kenya Rio Olympic fiasco.
On Wednesday State House dismissed claims that National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) booked a room for the Uhuru on a cruise ship in Rio at a cost of Sh2.1 million. According to them, Uhuru's bookings are officially made by the ministry of foreign affairs.
“Foreign travel for His Excellency the President is arranged solely by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At no time dos the ministry delegate that function to any other government department or agency,” State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu stated.
"It is curious as to why an agency not authorised to arrange his travel would purport to take on that role," he added.
Mr Esipisu noted that the President expects the matter to be investigated and those culpable brought to book.
On Tuesday, Team Kenya's Chef de Mission Stephen arap Soi told the Parliamentary Labour and Social Welfare Committee that Kenya booked rooms for the President at the rate of Sh60,000 per day ($605) for 18 days but they were never used.
"The direction that I was given was you leave one room in the cruise ship in the event that the head of state decides to come to Rio," Soi said.
