President Uhuru Kenyatta says the August 8 general election will go on as planned even if NASA refuses to take part.Speaking in Isiolo on Saturday, the president accused the Opposition of intimidating independent institutions, such as the Judiciary and IEBC. “They (NASA) should not threaten, intimidate Kenyans,” the president said, as quoted by The Standard. “If they do not want to participate (in the elections), the election will go on,” President Kenyatta said. NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga has threatened to boycott the general election over a number of grounds, including IEBC’s move to appoint election officials ‘without’ consultation and the decision of the electoral body to appeal a high court decision that requires election results announced at the constituency level be final — and not subject to changes at the IEBC national tallying centre. “Democracy allows Kenyans to choose their leaders freely without intimidation and the over 45 million Kenyans deserve respect and freedom to choose their leaders. Let's have respect for each other,” the president added.
