President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed into law The Universities (Amendment) Act 2016.
The new law states that a university student leader will hold office for only one term being eligible for re-election once.
The law further disqualifies a person who has been a member of the student council of a university for two terms from such election in any local university.
The new act is set to block perennial Nairobi University student leader Babu Owino from contesting again.
Owino has been at the helm of SONU for years, but last year his re-election led to widespread protests within the institution.
