President Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed reports that he endorsed Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Peter Kenneth.

Through his party, Jubilee, the President said he was neutral.

“Our attention has been drawn to media reports suggesting that His Excellency the President, in his role as the leader of the Jubilee Party, has indicated support for a candidate in the Nairobi gubernatorial race. These reports are untrue,” reads a statement signed by Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju.

He added, “The President has not endorsed any candidate, believing that Nairobi Jubilee members will make their choice in a free, fair and credible process at the nominations."

A video circulating on social media of Uhuru addressing Gatanga residents on Saturday was largely interpreted as he was backing Kenneth’s bid to unseat incumbent Governor Evans Kidero.

Uhuru was in the company of Kenneth, who will battle it out with Senator Mike Sonko for the Jubilee ticket in the Friday, April 21 nominations.

“Na muhoere njamba ino yanyu nigetha Nairobi nayo igakihotana (You should also pray for your man here so that he wins in Nairobi),” Uhuru said, amid cheers from the crowd.
