The three-month dusk-to-dawn curfew in Garissa, Lamu and Tana River is likely to be extended, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.
This is after acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i imposed the curfew in these regions starting from July 9 to October 9. Uhuru, who was speaking during his tour in Kilifi, said that the curfew will only be lifted after the Al Shabaab militia is wiped out of the regions mentioned.
The head of State said that he is not ready to lift the ban if the recent attacks will continue being witnessed across the nation as we head to the August General elections.
"We cannot lift it and record deaths the following day," he said, as Star quoted. Uhuru said that the government will take strict measures to ensure that the militia no longer exist in the nation"We must kill them until they return to where they came from. The state's first priority is the people's security," he said.
He further called upon residents of the three counties to corporate with security agencies to end the curfew.
"You want the curfew lifted. I have no problem with that. I'm also ready for that but you have to first do me a favor," Uhuru said.
He added:"You must work with security agencies to eliminate these criminals amongst us."
