Days after Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga led a section of Members of Parliament to claim that the pay cut on MPs salaries from Sh710,000 to Sh621,000 is not proper, President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta has responded.Uhuru has dismissed MPs opposed to the new package, terming them as greedy and with no passion to serve the public. The president-elect on Thursday said he supports the SRC recommendations and will not sign into law a bill that seeks to contest the SRC directive.
"As we await the ruling by the Supreme Court, I want to make it publicly clear that my support for SRC on cutting salaries is not changing and should the court rule in my favor, I swear I will not sign their proposals," he said at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
"It is shameful that we are barely a week away from polls and that they do not realise how they have made Kenyans angry with such remarks even before they are sworn in," he added.
Uhuru called on the elected leaders to concentrate more on their roles in public service and not salaries.
"Everybody knew their salaries before they sought election and these leaders need to know that anyone who is called to serve should have a system that recognises we are called to serve people not hurt them," he said.
