President Uhuru Kenyatta has further reiterated that the election will be held as planned whether or not the opposition participates.
Speaking on Tuesday at State house when he hosted leaders from Narok County, Kenyatta said the IEBC will in its current form conduct the polls.
He insisted the country cannot be held ransom by certain individuals (in referecent to Nasa demands), and that the polls will be held within the 60 days provided by the constitution.
The President said no one had the right to impose conditions on the IEBC before the repeat elections were held, and that threats by the opposition coalition NASA amounted to bullying, intimidation, and rogue politics, but would amount to nothing.
“The election must be done within 60 days (of the Supreme Court decision) and two, the election must be conducted by IEBC as required by the Constitution,” President Kenyatta said.
He added: “You (opposition) should go out and seek votes instead of focusing on issuing threats; the press conferences in Nairobi did not yield any votes for you in August,”
He further took a swipe at the opposition, saying they should stop lying to Kenyans that there will be a power vacuum if the election will not be held within the stipulated time.
If no election was held, the President said he would divert the savings to development, such as the flagship energy programme ‘last mile’.
His remarks come amid talks by the opposition that there will be no elections if their demands are not met.
