The President cited fund cuts by European donors as the reason behind the decision, saying participating countries cannot fill the financial gaps left.

This comes as a surprise as the government has persistently dismissed calls by the Opposition leaders to recall the troops and protect its citizens from retaliatory attacks by al Shabaab militia.

KDF moved into Somalia in 2011 to flush out the al Shabaab insurgents who had been conducted several kidnappings in the country, a move that has seen the country suffer a spate of retaliatory attacks from the al-Qaeda linked terror group.

In January this year, the terror group militants raided a KDF camp at El Adde, Somalia killing over 200 soldiers.
