Speaking on Tuesday morning during the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (Kepsa) roundtable meeting, Kidero cited a directive by the President that supported the matatu vehicles in the city centre.

He argued that the expression of support had given them the moral authority to operate with disregard to city bylaws.

He said the President lifted the phasing out of 14 seater buses which are the main cause of Nairobi traffic gridlock.

Kidero said he had proposed a total overhaul of the public transport sector with modern buses and mass transit trains.

The governor also said traffic police officers in the city have refused to cede authority on traffic control to the county despite this being a devolved function.

However, Kidero's remarks on political interference as the cause of traffic jams in the city were opposed by city businessman Chris Kirubi who told Kidero to stop blaming politics but do his work.

“Do your work and stop blaming politics. There is no politics in cleaning the city. Do your work Mr Governor,” said Mr Kirubi.
