The summit comes a few weeks after hotels and other entertainment spots reaped huge profits from the Kenya Primary School Head teachers Association (KEPSHA) conference.

Domestic tourism has boosted the hotel industry and other businesses in most parts of Mombasa. However, the number of tourists is likely to plummet as schools open this week.

However, the number of tourists visiting Mombasa is said to have declined compared to 2011.

The low population has been attributed to the limited number of chartered flights to Mombasa.

The Kenya Association of Hotel keepers and Caterers (KAHC) Kilifi County branch chairman Mr Chai Philip said that hotels owners want the Head of State to address the problem of open skies policy facing the Moi International Airport Mombasa.

Mr Chai said that the government should permit more international airlines to fly tourists to Mombasa.

He also noted that only four airlines; Small Planet from Poland, German leisure airline Condor, Meridiana Fly and Neosair from Italy fly to the coastal city.

“The reason why tourism is on its knees in Malindi is because there are very few charter flights from Italy to Mombasa,” said Chair, as quoted by Nation.
