President Uhuru Kenyatta was officially invited to attend the 106th Anniversary celebrations of the African National Congress, Eastern Cape due on Saturday.

During the meeting, President Uhuru will meet Raila Odinga’s friend Cyril Ramaphosa today. Ramaphosa is South Africa’s Vice President and leader of African National Congress (ANC) party. He is also a successful businessman and a former trade unionist.

“In a discussion a year ago about running for leadership of our respective political parties in Kenya and South Africa, we both emphasized the imperative of a renewed African democratization in order to build the economically, engender equitable growth and contribute to the global movement for the moral and ethical leadership,” Odinga said after Cyril Ramaphosa was appointed ANC leader.

Diplomatic sources told Nation that President Uhuru has plans to meet other leaders including Ramaphosa because Zuma’s tenure is about to end. Cyril Ramaphosa is the likely successor to Zuma making a meeting with him crucial.

“The President is using the visit to renew friendship with the new leadership of the African National Congress. This is strategic especially since South Africa is our partner and they have elections coming up next year,” the senior diplomat told Nation few hours before the President left Nairobi.
