President Uhuru Kenyatta should embrace dialogue to end the stalemate surrounding electoral body IEBC, Senator Janet Ong’era said.
This comes days after opposition Chief Raila Odinga wrote to the president about the possibility of engaging in a dialogue to discuss the way forward on embattled IEC commissioners who are under pressure to quit.
Ong’era on Thursday said dialogue will bring much-needed trust in the electoral body and help in preparation of peaceful elections in 2017.
“I want to urge the president to agree with our proposal as opposition. We all mean good for this national and whenever we have issues with the electoral body, we must all embrace dialogue,” she said.
“This is all about trust and when one side is not comfortable with the referee, it’s important that we sat down and try to find the best way forward for the sake of the country. Having a trusted IEBC will contribute significantly towards holding peaceful elections,” she added.
Ong’era slammed leaders who she accused of misleading the President on issues which need attention for the sake of Kenyans.
“This IEBC should not take the country to polls and it’s my wish that some leaders desist from misleading the president. There comes a time when issues of national importance like electoral matters should not be politicized,” she said.
Opposition Cord, members of the clergy, diplomats and Law society of Kenya have all demanded to reconstitute of IEBC.
