President Uhuru Kenyatta has been put to task to explain the source of funds used in facilitating merger of twelve political parties to form the new Jubilee Party.
A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders have accused the government of using taxpayers’ money to lure leaders of ‘smaller parties’ to join Jubilee.
They are; Siaya Senator James Orengo, Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, and MPs Junet Mohammed (Suna East) and Joseph Oyugi Magwanga (Kasipul).
“Jubilee leadership owe Kenyans an explanation on why officials of those political outfits must be huddled together in State House before the merger is announced,” said Orengo, on Sunday as quoted by the Nation.
Junet asked: “If TNA and URP which are the two major parties in Jubilee have never carried out party elections, when did some of these briefcase parties last hold their party polls?”
Last week, 12 political parties dissolved and joined the Jubilee Party. They are: The National Alliance (TNA); United Republican Party (URP); United Democratic Forum (UDF); New Ford Kenya; Ford People; Party of National Unity (PNU); Grand National Union (GNU); Tip; Republic Congress Party (RCP); Jubilee Alliance Party; Alliance Party of Kenya (APK); Unity Party of Kenya (UPK).
President Kenyatta and his deputy said the Jubilee Alliance Party will officially be launched in September 2016.
