President Uhuru Kenyatta kicked off a voter registration awareness drive that will take him across the country by urging Kenyans, especially the youth, to register in large numbers.

He said by registering as voters the youth, who are the majority, would have a direct say in determining their future by electing leaders they felt would cater for their interests.

''The only way for you to ensure the leaders of your choice get elected in the coming elections is by registering as a voter. That will enable you to take part in shaping the future of this country,'' he told youth at Kandara, Murang'a County, Thursday.

During his firts day of the drive, he flagged off a truck that will do road shows across the country to drum up support for voter registration.

Uhuru emphasised that registration was the only instrument available to ensure that people participated in electing their leaders, rather that complain about performance.

He also visited Gatunyu, Mabanda and Gatanga, where he urged residents to register early and avoid any last minute rush. 

"Youths should also make sure they take identity cards so that they don't miss out on their democratic right to vote,'' he sid.
