Politicians in Mandera allied to the Economic Freedom Party (EFP) have threatened to campaign against President Uhuru Kenyatta.
This follows last week’s revelation that close to 50,000 names in the county had been expunged from the IEBC register.
Among those whose names are missing in the register include Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow, governor aspirant Hassan Noor and senator contender Hassan Osman. They said there was a sinister motive in the move.
The three politicians risk being locked out of the August general election if the issue is not resolved. The three accuse IEBC officials of working with their opponents with the objective of confusing voters during election.
Kerrow, a seasoned politician said the issue affected all the six constituencies in Mandera calling for correction of the irregularities.
Osman on his part said: “The electoral agency is hell-bent on ensuring our supporters do not vote. Matters to do with the register cannot be taken lightly. We have moved to court seeking for an explanation from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.”
Noor told his supporters to keep calm as they resolve the matter in court.
“I am sure IEBC commissioners are clever enough and they want the elections to be done in a fair manner,” he said.
Noor, a former Rift Valley provincial commissioner is running against Jubilee Party’s Ali Roba.
Governor Roba is confident he will successfully defend his seat. He says his development record speaks for itself.
Roba says Mandera residents have benefited more under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
