President Uhuru Kenyatta unveiled the third batch of police vehicles and equipment acquired through the Jubilee government’s leasing programme, Monday.
Flanked by Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, the director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Ndegwa Muhoro, National Police Service Commission chairman Johnstone Kavuludi among other security leaders, Uhuru unveiled 525 vehicles, at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
"When my administration came into office four years ago, our country was facing serious security challenges emanating from terrorism and other forms of organized crime, which required innovative ways to tackle,'' Uhuru said.
In 2013, the National Police Service had in its strength a paltry 3,155 vehicles nationwide, most of which Uhuru said, were in disrepair.
"The total number of vehicles of different types in use by the police now stands at 5,875. These investments have impacted on the lives of ordinary Kenyans. There has been significant progress in counter-terrorism arising from enhanced capacity,'' he added, as he also unveiled 25 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.
The vehicles are expected to boost the Country's security status.
