A section of Nyamira County leaders have urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to consider launching a programme that will see all public schools in the country served with tap water.
Speaking on Sunday at Nyaronge primary school in Nyamira during a fundraising ceremony, several leaders reiterated the need for all public schools to be served with water for the purpose of domestic usage.
The government has already started a project that will see all public schools served with electricity in that move that also saw the president drastically reducing the cost of power installation to households significantly from Sh35,000 to Sh15,000.
“We would like to laud the president for seeing the essence of putting electricity in all public schools since it will significantly impact positively to the education standards of the region.
"However, it will be important if he considered launching water project for all school,” said Mr Julius Nyachieo, a former councillor.
“Water is very indispensable in the activities in our schools for domestic usage. By doing so, the government would have subsidised the expenses incurred by many institutions,” added Mr Osebe Mosigisi, another former councillor in the defunct county council.
They also challenged the area county government to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the national leadership to effect the program.
“I know it may be a burden to the government but the county governments also have a role to play. It will be essential if they also enter into a MoU with the national government for the purpose of making the programme a reality,” said Abuya Abuya.
