President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on the opposition leaders to spare Kenyans the destructive politics they engage in every election year.
The President said opposition politicians should engage in politics based on policies and to recognize that political rivalry is not equal to enmity.
The Head of State, who spoke when he launched development projects in Busia County, also told off the opposition for their calls to the Constitutional changes.
He said Kenyans cannot change the Constitution to satisfy the whims of a few people who are only interested in personal gains.
“We cannot change the Constitution like clothes or because two or three people are not satisfied. How can we continue talking about changing the Constitution every year?” said the President.
The President also dismissed those who have been calling for changes to the constitution to amend provisions on devolution.
He said devolution is working and all Kenyans need to do is to support the new system of Government for it to have maximum impact.
President Kenyatta made the call as he urged politicians to stop inciting Kenyans, a trend they have adopted every election year.
“Let us stop the destructive politics and give Kenya a chance to stabilize. We want stability for our country,” said the President.
President Kenyatta, who addressed rallies in Busia, Malaba, Adungosi and several other stop overs in the county, said Kenya will progress when all its citizens are united and push in the same direction.
Deputy President William Ruto said the opposition is in a slumber and has refused to accept the reality that the Jubilee Government has achieved more than they could imagine was possible.
“They have eyes but they cannot see. They have ears but they cannot hear. They carry heads but they do not use it,” said the DP.
The Deputy President said Kenyans will have a clear choice in 2017 because the contest will be between “Jubilee which is action oriented and the opposition which only has stories to tell”.
Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong said he appreciated the development projects the Jubilee Government was implementing in his county.
The Governor encouraged politicians from the government side and those in the opposition to work more closely together.
“The DP and the President are close friends of mine. We want development because we have been left behind for a long time,” said the Governor.
Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba called on those in the opposition to engage in mature politics.
“We want to play mature politics. Even by definition there is a clear difference between a rival and an enemy,” he said as he thanked the President and his deputy for addressing the needs of the region.
Teso South MP Mary Emaase said the people of Busia were fully supportive of the Jubilee Government.
The President was accompanied by leaders including Bungoma County Governor Ken Lusaka, Sirisia MP John Welukhe, Bumula MP Boniface Otsiula, Bungoma County Women Rep Reginalda Wanyonyi and Teso North MP Arthur Odera.
