The government announcement to repatriate refugees from the Daadab and Kakuma camps is neither cruelty nor a change of heart but in defense of sovereignty, President Uhuru Kenyatta has disclosed.
Addressing Kenyans during the 53rd Madaraka Day celebrations in Nakuru County, the president expressed concerns that led to the government's decision.
“In defense of that sovereignty, we must pre-empt any threat. That’s why my government took the painful step of closing the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Garissa County. The decision was difficult, but our security, and our national interests, dictated it. Kenya comes first,” explained President Kenyatta.
However, he assured that the government will continue to provide refuge to those fleeing their countries in search of a safe haven.
“We will continue to provide a safe haven for refugees, but that generosity will be balanced against the imperative of keeping Kenya safe. For twenty-five years, Kenya has hosted refugees from Somalia, from South Sudan, and from our other neighbours,’’ added Kenyatta.
