President Uhuru Kenyatta's website domain Uhuru.co.ke has been bought by someone who now demands a hefty sum of Sh1.1 Million to release it.

The stranger registered the domain after it expired and now wants Uhuru to pay 10,000 Euros for him to acquire it back.

The website, which was launched in 2011, was widely used in the 2013 elections and was used to showcase the President’s bio as well as the Jubilee party manifesto.

It has also been for the longest time on the president’s official twitter account @UKenyatta.

This is likely to turn out to be a high-profile cybersquatting case in the country.

Cybersquatting is the act of buying up domain names of well-known company or brand names in the hope of reselling them at a profit.

A number of enterprising individuals and companies apply for and reserve for sale domain names, either new or expired, that they think someone else will want, either now or in the future.

A few weeks ago Uhuru disbanded his Presidential Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU). Could this be the reason why Dennis Itumbi- Director of Digital Communication was sacked? For failing to register the domain after it expired, an outright case of negligence.
