President Uhuru Kenyatta has said the support he currently has across the country is adequate for him to clinch victory in August.
Uhuru said in 2013 he became president after trouncing the current opposition leaders who were at the time in charge of government.“Ruto and I were alone in 2013 and we were able to beat them,” he said in Nambale, Busia County during his final tour of Western region.“There should be no doubt that we shall trounce them again.”He said many of the leaders who were supporting the opposition were now backing his re-election.“Now I have Ababu, I have Eugene Wamalwa (Water Cabinet Secretary) and I have Governor Ken Lusaka as well as the governors of Tana River (Hussein Dado) and Kwale (Salim Mvurya) among many more,” Uhuru who is seeking a second term said.He said development projects initiated by Jubilee were visible contrary to claims by the opposition that his government had under-performed.Governors Mvurya and Dado are among leaders elected in 2013 on opposition party tickets but have since decamped to Uhuru’s Jubilee Party.Mvurya left Wiper in 2016 while Dado joined the ruling party from ODM in February this year.Uhuru is banking on the two to win votes in Coast, a region considered an opposition zone.Coast overwhelmingly voted for opposition leader Raila Odinga in 2013.Other leaders in the region that borders the Indian Ocean who have left the opposition and are vying for elective seats on Jubilee Party tickets include MPs Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi north), Khatib Mwashetani (Lunga Lunga), Masoud Mwahima (Likoni) and Kilifi woman representative Zainab Chidzuga.Mung'aro is challenging Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi.“What you need is a government that will come up with solutions to create jobs for our youth and improve our economy,” said Uhuru, who was in the company of his deputy William Ruto.
