President Uhuru Kenyatta has defended himself after he skipped Monday’s presidential debate.
Speaking on Tuesday during his central kenya tour, the head of state said he ‘was not ready’ to waste time in the debate that was organized by Debate Media Limited.
He further noted that he could not avail himself to discuss issues with Odinga, since he did not have any agenda for the country.
“Do you want me to spend my time responding to Raila or commissioning projects? I decided that he will debate alone because I have nothing to debate with him. I will not waste my time there,” he said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Kenyatta left many Kenyans astounded on Monday, when he failed to turn up for the debate that was organized at the Catholic University of East Africa.
His absence gave his main challenger Raila Odinga over two hours of prime time coverage, where he articulated his vision for the country.
Kenyatta had initially indicated that he would not be part of the debate, but events on Monday, where he canceled schedule rallies had Kenyans thinking he might attend the debate after all.
Together with the Deputy President William Ruto, the two had said they were not fully consulted over the issue, and chose to stay away from the event.
