The entry of Prof Sam Ongeri to opposition leader Raila Odinga’s camp has significantly revamped ODM party in Gusii if at all rallies that have been held is anything to go by.
Having worked with Uhuru and helped him score 30 percent of Kisii votes in 2013; Ongeri ditched the ruling party for ODM based on ‘intelligence’ on the ground.
Sometimes last year, Jubilee team had taken the war to Odinga’s doorstep with only Governor James Ongwae and nominated Senator Janet Ong’era remaining only standing soldiers in ODM.
The party was significantly weakened by temporary exit of Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka, Deputy Governor Joash Maangi and inactiveness of South Mugirango MP Manson Nyamweya and his Bomachoge Chache counterpart Simon Ogari.
But its Ongeri’s entry that has completely reenergized the party with sources revealing that he was key behind rejoining of Onyonka (who has since joined Ford Kenya) and Maangi to the ODM party.
His spirited campaigns along with Ongwae and the other ODM leaders have drastically thwarted Jubilee’s influence with some of her leaders facing hostility when campaigning.
When he appeared at Rigoma ground in Nyamira on Sunday, Musalia Mudavadi was forced to allow him address enthusiastic supporters who demanded to hear from him.
Although he had not joined ODM formally last year, it is believed that he played a vital role in the victory of Nyacheki MCA seat.
