President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid continues to experience a number of challenges as the elections date inches closer.
This is after a section of leaders from Deputy William Ruto’s home turf vowed to rally the electorate behind NASA Super Alliance (NASA Presidential candidate Raila Odinga, who is contesting for presidency for the fourth time.
The new twist of events in the Rift Valley is likely to jeopardise President Uhuru’s re-election considering the massive support he was accorded in the previous general election.
Led by URP Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Koech and Chesumei MP Elijah Lagat, the leaders have said that they will rally the electorate to stand with Raila, Uhuru's fiercest political rival.
In an interview with The Standard, Lagat said that the current leadership had failed Kenyans, adding that the two leaders stand no chance of re-election.
“NASA is a winning team and we will rally behind its flag bearer Raila. JP has failed and will lead us nowhere. The road projects they talk about were done during the Grand Coalition regime and includes Mosoriot-Kaiboi, Chepterit-Kapsisiywa in Nandi and even the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR),” said Lagat.
The remarks of Lagat were backed by Tarus, a former Kenyan Ambassador to Australia who said that the economic situation of the Rift Valley has suffered greatly under the leadership of the duo.
Other leaders who have also thrown their weight behind Raila are Jesse Maiz (Eldoret South), former MPs Peris Simam (Eldoret South), Stephen Tarus (Emgwen), John Cheruiyot (Aldai) and Judith Cheptoo Koskei a former Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) director.
