A key member of the Jubilee Party in the region that is more receptive to opposition politics, Obure failed to oust area Governor James Ongwae, an outcome that is now threatening his checkered political career.
At 73 years, Obure is now in the twilight of his decades-long political journey that started in 1988 when he was elected Bobasi MP. Since then, his career has had its ups and downs.
A one -time Finance Minister during President Daniel Moi's last days at the helm of the country's leadership, Obure edged former Education Minister Sam Ongeri in the race for Kisii Senator in 2013, a seat he won on an ODM ticket. But it was his decision to decamp from the party in the run to the August 8 poll that may cost his political life.
After losing in that poll, Obure joined the race for Senate Speaker. However, Jubilee Party settled on former Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka who went on to win the seat, a move that forced him to withdraw from the race.
Relegated to the periphery in Jubilee leadership, Obure’s political journey is as good as sealed.
