The Public Service Commission (PSC) has declared that it will take away the President’s powers to hire personal staff members.
As a result, President Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and retired Presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki will have their personal staff members allocated by the commission.
“The Commission shall appoint personal staff for the President, Deputy President and retired presidents based on an establishment approved by the Constitution,” reads a draft publication by PSC Chairperson Margaret Kobia.
The proposal to initiate the plan is currently being debated and will become rule on its approval.
“Personal staff shall serve at the pleasure of the president, deputy president or retired President and for such period shall be determined by the Commission,” the publication reads further.
According to reports, the change in regulations are believed to have been issued after a report from the Controller of Budget showed the Sh1 Billion had been used to pay Presidency staffers between June 2016 and February 2017.
