Despite promising to take a break from campaigns should Raila Odinga be named opposition team’s flag bearer, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto have launched a series of heightened campaigns across the country.
After several months of uncertainty within the opposition coalition NASA, the team settled on Odinga from a list of four potential contestants.
And prior to April’s announcement, the two leaders had insisted that they will not waste time campaigning over a ‘perennial’ loser.
“We can waste time campaigning if that Vitendawili man is selected,” said Ruto in apparent reference to Raila Odinga.
“We beat him in 2013 and I don’t see why I should waste time campaigning if he is chosen,” added Kenyatta in a past event.
On the contrary, both Kenyatta and Ruto have launched serious campaigns across the country despite claiming that Odinga’s candidature will be a walkover for them.
Also, Odinga has come up with a 15- campaign team which has divided the country into four segments and he has embarked on a do or die campaign.
Should he win in August, Odinga promised to be a transitional president after which he will pave way for other leaders in 2022.
