The Mombasa Council of Elders has thrown its weight behind President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto’s re-election bid.
Chairman Mohamed Jahazi said Jubilee deserves a second term citing the government’s efforts to initiate development projects in the region.Jahazi who addressed journalists Sunday at the Royal Castle Hotel, said the Uhuru-led administration had achieved so much within a short period, and was upbeat they will do more if re-elected.“Despite the ICC cases hanging heavy over their shoulders, the two were able to do this much. What about when they are free?” he said as quoted by The Star. Some of the projects the chairman said UhuRuto have initiated include the construction of the second berth at the Mombasa port, the standard gauge railway (SGR) as well as the revival of the Mtongwe Channel Crossing. He said Uhuru and Ruto have resettled the landless, issued title deeds to Coast residents and also bought a new ferry. The region is expecting a new ferry, MV Jambo Mombasa from Turkey before it is officially unveiled by Uhuru later this month.Jahazi also dismissed the opposition’s claims that the Jubilee administration wants to transfer port operations to Naivasha by building a dry port there.
