A section of villagers from Bonyunyu in Nyamira have a reason to smile after a group of well-wishers from London donated about 50,000 that will be used to build toilets in the area.

Area residents are said to have been exposed to dangerous diseases such as cholera since villagers are using the traditional methods of going to nearby bushes to relieve themselves.

But on Thursday, the group of well-wishers led by Ms Adams Washington visited the village and gave the donation to community leaders and urged them to commence the construction with immediate effect.

“We are living in the new millennium and everyone must know that toilets are very essential," Ms Washington said.

"We cannot be exposed to risks for just not having a toilet. I want the leaders to ensure we have at least two toilets because you have donated a land and they must be well maintained.”

According to her, the project is set to continue and will target a number of areas in Nyamira county by the end of this year in which they are looking for at least 200 households said to be suffering from the same problem.

“We have done the survey and that is why we want to reach as many families as possible. If we reach 200 homes, that won’t be a bad figure but what is important is to save our people from contracting diseases such as cholera,” she added.
