Over 1, 000 students from Umma University have protested over delayed graduation. The learners say that the institution has failed to issue them certificates despite successful completion of their courses. They also claimed that the university has not given them a clear communication about the delay.
The students said that they are frustrated because they cannot seek for employment. They spoke to Daily Nation and begged not be named for fear of being victimized and blamed the board of trustees for ignoring them.
“The board of trustees seems not to be concerned about the plight of over 1, 200 students. What we are demanding is proper communication as to when our certificates will be issued,” one student told the local daily.
They said that they might be forced to sue the institution if their frustrations will not be addressed soon.
“We are frustrated since we cannot start post graduate courses or apply for available for job opportunities,” he added.
When the local daily contacted Umma University, the registrar of academics, Dr. Hussein Ali Osman, said that the university is trying its best to sort the affected students.
“The university’s management is waiting for a charter and once all procedures are over, a graduation ceremony will be held in two to three months’ time,” he told the Nation.
