NASA and Jubilee Party have indicated that they will not accept a proposal to have the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) finance the printing and delivery of ballot papers for the October elections.

The two parties indicated on Tuesday that they will not take the deal by the Independent Electoral Commission, with the commission’s CEO Ezra Chiloba indicating the plan was in the pipeline.

Garissa Township MP Aden Duale was the first Jubilee Party member to air his views, arguing that the country was capable of running the election on its own.

“Kenya is not a banana republic. The only places where the UN can conduct elections are Haiti and Liberia,” Mr Duale said in the National Assembly.

He added: “Any election conducted with proceeds from the UN is illegal. This is just because he wants to satisfy the ego of someone who is power-hungry.”

According to IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati, their move to have the UNDP print the papers was part of the plan to restore the public confidence, which was eroded from the August polls.

The polls were annulled by the Supreme Court, citing illegalities and irregularities that put the whole process in question.

The country is readying for another presidential election, which is set to be held on the 26th of October.
