Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Richard Tong’i has ruled out any possibility of the United Nations carrying out the upcoming presidential repeat poll as there is a body whose sole mandate is to plan the election.
Speaking on Sunday at Namba nne the legislator said Jubilee brigade will protect the commissioners in office and other IEBC officials in the electoral commission and called upon those who are not happy with the body to follow the due procedures of getting them out of office.
“Kenya remains to be an independent country and we have bodies set by the constitution, bringing in the UN agency will be treated as unconstitutional,” said Tong’i.
According to the MP, the UN can only conduct elections in those countries whose systems are not functional of which Kenya is excluded.
Tong’I called upon those pushing for reforms in the IEBC to consider the fact that Kenya is in a limbo and there is not enough time for the same.
This comes barely days after the opposition team led by Raila Odinga vowed to push for reforms as they won’t go for another election if credibility isn’t assured.
On the other side, the IEBC had sought the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to procure election materials and oversee deployment of transmission gadgets.
