Uncertainty now looms at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission over the fate of its commissioners that have for a while, been involved in a row with the country's major opposition coalition led by Raila Odinga.
It is now speculated that the four senior commissioners in the electoral body could be sent packing after the parliamentary committee on Legal Affairs hinted on forming a seven-man panel to oversee reforms in the IEBC.
According to Samuel Chepkonga, the committee chair on legal matters, the commission's Act will be amended by the legislators to provide for a comprehensive procedure that will be followed in nominating, approving and appointing of the panel's members and importantly, the chairperson.
"The Justice committee acknowledges that urgent electoral reforms are valid and necessary to facilitate the swift restructuring of the entire electoral system. However, electoral reforms must be preceded by exhaustive and constructive national debate, with structured negotiations and dialogue," noted Chepkonga as he made his submission in the legislative house on Tuesday.
These developments come at the wake of time when President Kenyatta and his deputy invited the opposition to state house to deliberate on issues surrounding the IEBC commissioners and the desired reforms in the electoral body.
