Kagumu Primary School, situated in Gilgil sub-county was closed after parents stormed in, forced all students to vacate and locked the doors.

The parents said that the school, which has more than 500 students, has only four teachers, which does not make sense in the delivery of learning.

John Mwangi, a parent at the school said that the ratio of teacher to that of student is discouraging.

“How would these four teachers cope with teaching over 500 students? These teachers are over stressed in the sense that they go to bask on rocks behind the classrooms,” added Mwangi.

A visit by our reporter at the school revealed that despite its magnificent blocks with new features where walls are painted with pictures, words and letters, the parents’ accusations hold; the school had two teachers.

According to Joseph Kibe, a senior teacher, the school has been experiencing financial constraints, leading to the current situation.

“The management is unable to pay teachers, forcing them to seek employment elsewhere,” said Kibe,

The school is funded by charitable trusts and foundations, and according to Kibe, the grants are short coming, pushing the school into the current situation.
