The government has ordered for closure of all underground discos and bars in Eldoret town.

The main reason cited for the move is health and security concerns.

The director of the Uasin Gishu Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, Armstrong Rono, said all bars located near schools and universities will also be shut down.

Rono said opening bars and drinking joints near schools, especially primary is against the law, adding that 300 metres policy must apply.

Uasin Gishu is among counties which have been affected by illicit brews that are sold in the joints.

National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) has intensified the crackdown on bars operating illegally across the country.

All these efforts are in a bid to reduce deaths caused by poisonous brews and other side-effects like blindness.
