Millers have warned that the price of maize flour could soon shoot up due to unsteady supply by the government.
Cereal Millers Association chair Nick Hutchinson told Parliament on Tuesday they currently have no stock and are heavily relying on the imported maize.
"All millers have run out of maize. We are all waiting for the next vessel to arrive. The end of May is tight and we also suspect the end of June is going to be tight," he said, as reported by The Star
Earlier this month, the government stepped in to subsidize maize flour amid sharp criticism on the legalities of importing maize from Mexico.
GOK branded 2kg packets will go for Sh90 and 1kg packs for about half the price.
Agriculture CS Willy Bett said the government resolved to source and sell maize to millers at an average cost of Sh2,300 per 90kg bag.
The subsidised flour was expected to last until September 30, 2017.
Millers said anyone found selling flour above the gazetted Sh90 should be jailed for breaking the law.
They told the Agriculture Committee that they has a combined maize stock of 110,000 bags when they sounded a warning in April.
