The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has said that it has voluntarily repatriated 18,278 Somali refugees from the Dadaab camps since December 2014.
In its report released on Thursday, UNHCR issued that a total of 12,177 refugees were repatriated this year alone.
It further said that some other 1,278 returnees were supported to voluntarily go back to their Somalia nation between July 1-15.
“Some 1,128 returnees were ferried by road, while another 150 persons went back to Mogadishu by flight,” issued the refugee agency.
Kenyan government, in collaboration with the UNHCR, is currently working on the voluntary repatriation of the over 300,000 refugees foreign refugees living in Dadaab after it announced the famous closure of the camps citing security and environmental concerns.
Dadaab camps, the world’s largest refugee holding, was set up over 20 years ago to accommodate people fleeing domestic conflicts in Somalia.
