Homa Bay County has achieved improvement in the number of expectant mothers seeking skilled delivery in various health facilities within the county.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), the rate of mothers who deliver in health facilities in Homa Bay County has improved to 61 percent from 39 percent in the year 2014.
Unicef representative to Kenya Werner Schultink said the progress is expected to prevent maternal mortality and HIV infection.
Speaking to journalists when he presented two ambulances bought by the Unicef to the county government of Homa Bay, Schultink said the organization is committed to improving health in the county.
He added that the Unicef and the county government of Homa Bay had recruited community health workers who had made efforts in reducing pneumonia infections.
Governor Cyprian Awiti expressed optimism that the two ambulances will enhance referral services in the county.
The two increased the number of ambulances of from nine to eleven in the county.
The governor said the effort will help them achieve their endeavors to enhance efficient and effective medical care to the area residents.
