Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) is now demanding the lowering of the minimum university entry grade to C.

Currently, a candidate sitting for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) must attain at least grade C+ to get admission to the university.

But citing the poor performance in last year's national exams, Kuppet want the entry grade lowered to enable more students pursue higher education.

Out of 610,000 candidates who were tested, only 70, 073- which is 11 per cent- managed grade C + and above.

Kuppet Secretary General Akello Misori, in a press conference in Nairobi, said failure to review the requirement would kill public universities.

"I want to believe that the results were not a true reflection of the quality of students we have in the country," he said, Tuesday.

Misori challenged the Education Ministry, under the Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, to provide a policy framework for the future of more than 500,000 students who performed dismally in the exams.

"The CS has not given a single way forward for the students who failed in the national exams," the union boss noted.
